The Importance of Root Canal Treatment
Root Canal Therapy and Abscessed Teeth
Root Canal Therapy, also known as endodontic treatment, is essential when a tooth's pulp (the nerve and blood supply) becomes infected or inflamed. This condition, often referred to as an abscessed tooth, can result in severe pain and discomfort.
An abscessed tooth typically occurs when bacteria penetrate the tooth. Even a small chip can allow bacteria to reach the pulp, leading to its destruction. This issue is serious and can result in various side effects and future complications, including:
- Bitter taste in mouth and/or bad breath
- Pain when chewing
- Swelling in mouth and neck
- Sensitivity to heat and cold
- Fever
- Loose teeth
- Tooth loss
- Shift of the remaining teeth
How Can Root Canals Help?
Root canal treatment may be the only option to save a tooth from extraction. This procedure involves removing the nerves located within the tooth's root. Once the damaged pulp is taken out, the tooth can function properly again without sensitivity.
During the root canal, Dr. Patel will create a small opening in the tooth to access and remove the infected pulp. He will then clean the area and the surrounding root canals before sealing and filling the tooth. In many cases, we recommend reinforcing a treated tooth with a crown.
The image below shows an infected tooth with a dark shadow at the root tip. After root canal treatment, you can see signs of healing. Thanks to this therapy, the tooth can be preserved for many years to come.
