Remove Stains and Brighten Your Smile
Tooth whitening is a process that bleaches the enamel to lighten and remove tooth discoloration and stains from teeth. Tooth discoloration can be caused many factors, including: beverages that stain (such as coffee, teas, and colas), tobacco, trauma, tetracycline (antibiotic) staining, excessive fluoride, and nerve degeneration.
Research and clinical studies show that under the supervision of your dentist, whitening teeth with carbamide peroxide and/or hydrogen peroxide is safe for both teeth and gums. These whiteners usually come in a gel form and are applied by the use of a custom-fitted mouth guard, which we will make for you, fitting your teeth precisely.
How does a teeth whitening procedure work?
There are two main categories of whitening products: peroxide-containing bleaching agents and whitening toothpastes or dentifrices. Within the category of peroxide-containing bleaching agents, most whitening systems use either carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide as the active ingredient.
The concentration of these ingredients determines the strength, effectiveness, and safety of the whitening system. Teeth whitening systems work by causing a chemical reaction between the bleaching agent and the discolored molecules, which breaks up and removes stains and discoloration.
What to Do and What to Expect
- Be cautious about your food and drink choices, particularly during the first 48 hours following your in-office treatment. It takes a couple of days for the protective layer of your teeth to restore itself, so it's best to avoid deeply pigmented foods and beverages that could stain your teeth. This includes items such as coffee, red wine, dark sodas, tea, berries, grapes, chocolate, and other richly colored foods.
- Steer clear of smoking, as it can lead to staining and yellowing of your teeth. If you've recently had your teeth whitened, it’s advisable to avoid smoking for at least the first few days. Cutting back or quitting smoking will not only improve the appearance of your smile but also benefit your oral health and overall well-being.
- It’s common to experience sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures for a few days following the procedure. This discomfort typically diminishes over time. To help ease any sensitivity, you can take over-the-counter pain relievers and use toothpaste specifically formulated for sensitive teeth.
- Keep in mind that the results of teeth whitening procedures can differ from one patient to another. Factors such as the original shade of your teeth, your diet, and your oral hygiene habits can impact both the short-term and long-term outcomes. Furthermore, teeth whitening treatments do not alter the color of existing fillings, crowns, bridgework, or dental bonding. If this is a concern for you, we can discuss options for replacing any restorations.
- To preserve the results of your treatment, it’s essential to practice good oral hygiene and maintain regular dental care. If necessary, we can also provide a take-home whitening system for periodic touch-ups.
